Chapter 31: The Bloodcore’s Magic

The night dissipated as the sun ascended once again.

The second day of sailing went smoothly, with neither Rou Zang nor the Bath Tub being sighted.

After waiting till nightfall, the young captain boarded the Deep Sea Monster Fish again.

Yesterday’s magic tests were mainly about verifying War Merchant’s research data.

The tests Cang Xu and Zi Di prepared tonight were more focused on determining the young man’s state.

The youngster considered the first test extremely important.

Under Cang Xu’s and Zi Di’s attentive gazes, the dragonman youngster chanted, then exhaled dragon breath.

The dragon breath’s intense torrid heat quickly melted a piece of metal.

The temperature in the alchemy cabin rapidly rose, and despite the shining magic defenses, Cang Xu and Zi Di couldn’t help but jump back when they felt the blaze.

Upon seeing the metal melt into a pool, Cang Xu’s eyes couldn’t help but contract.

“This magic has proved to be able to beat back Rou Zang, its powerful might can match gold levels.” Said Zi Di.

Cang Xu shook his head, “Strictly speaking, this is just a racial spell.”

“The Lord Captain’s Flame Dragon King bloodline is not complete, therefore he needs to chant first. If he didn’t, would no fire be expelled?”

The young man slightly stared, then thought to himself, “I actually haven’t tried that.”

“After I transformed into this form, I automatically gained these racial magic abilities, and knew how I should activate them.”

“As if that was how it was always done, like how people knew how to breathe and run.”

Cang Xu then said, “It isn’t too late to try now.”

The dragonman youngster nodded, “Then I shall try.”

He went silent, then stood there awkwardly, “I…don’t know what to do.”

Without the chanting, he had no idea how to activate the Life Scorching Dragon Breath.

Cang Xu and Zi Di glanced at each other, then the former analyzed, “It seems the Flame Dragon King bloodline is very damaged.”

Zi Di looked at the youngster and said, “If you were a magician, perhaps you could have done something.”

“What does that mean?” The dragonman felt how shallow his scholarly knowledge was compared to the two before him.

Zi Di explained, “Racial magics are similar to normal magical abilities. Magic beasts can all use racial magics, these are innate abilities of theirs.

“It is commonly said that magicians research racial magics to ascertain and create theories and find spells.”

“Magic beasts absorb external elements, harmonize and balance their own magic power, then over time, they will form a magic crystal within themselves.”

“When magic beasts discharge racial magics, the magic power accumulated in their magic crystal will act as their power source. If the magic crystal runs out of magic power, the magic beast’s racial spell will extract magic power from all over its body. If the magic required is too high, the magic beast will grow weak, and its bloodline will degenerate.”

Zi Di continued, “For a magician to use magic, two things are necessary. First, the magician needs to either gather the required magic power, use sorcery material, influence the world with their spirit, draw support from a magic formation, or use other such methods to utilize the capabilities of external elements.”

“Second, they need to use their spirit to construct a magic model.”

“Only when these two requirements are met can magic be cast.”

“The Flame Dragon King’s Life Scorching Dragon Breath is a racial magic, but since dragons are an intelligent race, with the Flame Dragon King Clan thorough research, it has been improved into actual magic.”

“Chanting is a way to cast spells. The variations in tone assist the magic model’s construction, as well as helping magic power both inside and outside of the body.”

Hearing this, the dragonman youngster understood it a little more, “I am not a magician, I don’t know how to construct a Life Scorching Dragon Breath magic model.”

“But I have the Flame Dragon King bloodline, thus I can activate the magic, Life Scorching Dragon Breath.”

“However, the bloodline is badly damaged, and I cannot use the racial magic, Life Scorching Dragon Breath. However, the corresponding bloodline has come with innate knowledge and with the chant aiding me, I can still use it barely.”

“Correct, it is exactly so.” Zi Di nodded.

After the dragonman youngster understood the process, his heart felt rejoiced many times over.

He was lucky.

It was only luck that after absorbing the Flame Dragon King bloodline that he obtained the racial magic, Life Scorching Dragon Breath.

The Flame Dragon King clan’s development was successful, and the relevant memories were passed on through the bloodline for its descendants. After this unexpected turn of events, the dragonman youngster benefited from this research. The young man pondered deeper, “To use Life Scorching Dragon Breath, I need to chant for at least 3.5 seconds.”

“Currently, it seems I need to improve this ability. I can either absorb dragon race bloodlines to mend the Dragon King race bloodline to make this innate ability stronger and easier to use, or I can study sorcery techniques. With the help of magical means, I can cast use Life Scorching Dragon Breath faster.”

“That’s correct,” Zi Di approved, “IF you become a magician and understand how to use spirit power to construct magic models, you can dispense with the chanting process.”

Then Cang Xu said, “Regardless of whether it is racial magic or real magic, both need energy. I observed in the experiment that, sure enough, the Bloodcore’s magic reserves have been depleted.”

Cang Xu sighed, “This magic truly is marvelous. It can transform and maintain the shape of a lifeform, while also being able to consume living beings for energy.”

“What magic or divine spells can do this?” Cang Xu asked.

The young captain stared blankly, then awkwardly rubbed his nose and replied, “I am not a templar knight.”

Cang Xu shook his head, “I have another question, can the Bloodcore absorb battle qi?”

The young captain brow’s furled, “The Bloodcore is only effective on lifeforms, battle qi and magic power are types of energy.”

But Cang Xu replied with, “The Bloodcore can act as a substitute for magic power, and active racial magics. Why can’t magic power be used instead of the Bloodcore’s magic?”

Zi Di also muttered to herself, “Currently, we know that the Bloodcore’s magic grows by absorbing lifeforms. For now, we still don’t know the limits of how much magic the Bloodcore can store.”

“The Bloodcore was developed by War Merchant, we can regard it as a successful piece of alchemy magic.”

“It absorbs bloodlines while simultaneously drawing the internal energy from its target. This hypothesis is based on the fact that all who had their bloodlines absorbed always turn into a pile of ash.”

“If the Bloodcore does not absorb the target’s internal energy, their flesh wouldn’t turn to ash and instead have some energy left over, causing the remains to look differently.”

“Based on this, the Bloodcore can absorb battle qi, magic power, and so on.”

The young man was dumbfounded for a time.

He looked at the ghost girl and necromancer, and began to share the joyous news of the Bloodcore.

“Our harvest was great from War Merchant’s data. Although many of the Bloodcore’s secrets were considered by War Merchant to be ordinary and basic, there were priceless to me.”

“Why didn’t I think of this myself?”

The young man soon sank into another period of reflection.

Why didn’t he think of the possibility that the Bloodcore was effective against battle qi?

He seemed to always unconsciously neglect this.

Why?

Firstly, I was always trying to survive and mentally exhausted on Mystifying Monster Island. Secondly, the Bloodcore’s magic was always enough, I didn’t need an additional source. Thirdly, my body never reacted to the Bloodcore’s magic. Fourthly, I was always worried the Bloodcore had some mysterious danger and never thought to use the Bloodcore to absorb myself or even my own battle qi!”

In fact, due to Mystifying Monster Island magic prohibition, even if the young man thought about testing it, he had no means of using his own battle qi.

When all said and done, could the Bloodcore affect battle qi?

Cang Xu and Zi Di soon thought of a way to test this.

They found two dead fish, silver level magic beasts. The fish were frozen lumps when they were placed into the center of the alchemy formation.

Cang Xu then gutted the magic crystals out of the fish while using the alchemy formation to dispel their remaining internal magic power.

Zi Di was on the side aiding him.

A moment later, the two obtained two cleaned fish corpses.

“Please imbues this fish with battle qi, my Lord.” Cang Xu instructed.

The young man did so.

Upon receiving the White River battle qi, the dead fish immediately rejected it, causing the battle qi to wreak havoc on the bodies while dissipating outwards from them.

“Now, please use the Bloodcore to absorb it.”

Seeing the Bloodcore successfully absorb it, Cang Xu then said, “My Lord, please absorb the other fish. Pay attention and compare the amounts of magic energy you receive from either fish.”

After the young man did so, his face twitched, “Although I cannot accurate assess the amount of magic, I did get more from the first fish.”

Zi Di looked at the two tiny piles of gray dust and said, “We don’t detect any energy dissipations, this proves battle qi can really be absorbed by the Bloodcore.”

The young captain exposed a smile. “It seems battle qi can replenish the Bloodcore and be converted into its magic.”
